Mana, mana, and more mana!!!

by Lang_7588 Oct 18, 2009, 4:56 PM PDT

This is a fun strategy. This was my first Disgaea game, and I'm not disappointed. Story's kinda odd, bu that's Disgaea for ya. Fighting is fun, and the stages are creative with the colored squares and geo blocks. Still looks like the PS2 disgaea games; 2D sprites and people have also mentioned that they are still pixelated.

If there's one thing to note, -Everything- that your characters can use (skills, spells, boosters, and class upgrades) needs mana. There are many ways to get this for them, but the amount of mana needed for these things is immense.

Fun game, huge input of time needed, but great game.

Good Strategy Game

by crazw Aug 24, 2009, 7:37 AM PDT

I give 4 stars for the strategy game play. I hate the corny demon school plot. Too childish.
The original plot from disgaea 1 & 2 were just fine.

This game is halfbaked

by georgiemark Aug 15, 2009, 6:13 AM PDT

What to say

a) Pixelated sprites
b) Bad camera angles
c) Toilet humour which ain't funny (and I love toilet humour)
d) just a couple of cutscenes
e) I still haven't figured out whether there is a story behind all this.

Better luck next NIS

Take It Or Leave It

by RedMetalSky May 23, 2009, 1:20 AM PDT

The First Disgaea had the best story and characters in my opinion. The retro feel that Nippon Ichi software gives to their games by using simple looking sprites is cool but may put people off who are not used to the companies games. If you like the Nippon Ichi games or specifically Disgaea you may want to get this game.

I am new to the series, just now starting with 3, and I love it. It's a great strategy RPG with plenty to keep you entertained.

The Niche Series Goes Next-Gen!

by McFini May 6, 2009, 7:35 PM PDT

My Disgaea experience started back when I got a demo disc in a Playstation magazine which had a trailer for the first Disgaea. It was quirky, odd but it immediately had my attention (when I saw the damage number reach into the millions). A sequel and a couple remakes later, we've arrived at the latest installation of Disgaea, Disgaea 3: Absence of Justice.

Yet again, a new protagonist leads the series, Mao, student at the Netherworld Demon Academy who is obsessed with destroying his father after he destroyed his game console (remember, Mao is a Demon so death is probably letting his old man off easy). However, after careful research (read: Comic books), Mao has determined that the only way to beat his dad is to become a Hero! If you're at all familiar with the series, you know what comes next. If you're not, well:

Hilarity ensues!

Story cutscenes are carried out via cut-outs atop a detailed background or sprites wandering around the isometric field. For a game running on the PS3, it's a bit of a disappointment they didn't go for fully animated anime cutscenes... The battles unfold with the familiar style as in the two previous games with your little damage dealing characters running amuck slaughtering everything that stands in your, and Mao's way!

Being confined to the four rotated views of the battlefield (as well as the three levels of zoom) still causes some problems as some of the more detailed levels might obscure some of the action.

The Disgaea series, nay, NIS, never really relied upon the "high-quality" graphics of staples like Final Fantasy, Gears and what have you to be the defining points of their games. They have their own undeniable charm which mostly involves breaking the 4th wall like it was a lv 1 geo block. The writing is humorous and witty while still retaining a degree of seriousness and urgency that makes you want to play that next stage or chapter in order to see what happens.

In all, Disgaea 3 will provide you with a great experience as you get to hear Laharl complain, yet again, that he isn't the main character!

Another Amazing Addition To My Favorite RPG Series

by Ukushi Mar 13, 2009, 5:39 PM PDT

This game is just as fun as Disgaea 1 & 2, not as good, but just as fun. The series went down a little with some new ideas that didn't work as good as they could have. Still recommend it to any JRPG, Strategy, and Disgaea freak around. 5/5

Disgaea Fan's review

by True_Mana_Beast Feb 4, 2009, 3:02 PM PST

First let me say Disgaea 3 is the reason I had to buy a ps3, and it was worth it. However that doesn't mean the game lived up to what I wanted it to be. Many of the games systems that have been used in the past have been modifed or complelty removed which is good and bad, it's good that they are trying to reach out and find a new idea, but in the end Disgaea 2 seems to have a better system in my opinion. The story while good in it's own right feels to similar to the first Disgaea, Son of the overlord arrogant closed off no friends ect. While I would go so far as to call it a rehash the similarities are noticeable, however if you never played the first one then this could make the story much better. One of thing is the length and pacing seems off, the game could use another chapter or two, which could also give some room to explore some other chars backgroud feelings more closly. However this is a similar problem with the Disgaea series in whole. Of course once you reach the Epiloge is really where one could say the game begins as it allows access to all the special areas and chareters and power leveling galor. This next comment may sound odd but I love games that use 2-d, however I think the sprties could have been much sharper leading to a small annoyance. In addtion one triva element bothered me with the new system there are no longer as high of named level spells so to speak ie. mega, giga, omega, tera In Disgaea 2 the highest level spells had a high grade special animation that was beautiful, unlike the omega level spells which had only a large static image then the effect, Disgaea 3 did not use the good animation so to speak. Again while these are not noticed by most or even cared about for that matter I simply think they could have handled things better. On a ending note some of the other trivial things have been addressed much as not being able to get most of the disgaea 2 cast and more importantly the Nekomata through game add ons to bad you have to pay for them though at least it's only a few bucks. In the end if you love jsrpg's "Jap Stratagey Role Playing Games" this will provide you well over 200 hours of gameplay.
