A fanboy's dream come true...

If you love arcade-style beat 'em ups like Gauntlet Legends, Turtles In Time, etc, you've found the right game. You don't have to love/know Marvel Comics' characters to enjoy this game. The gameplay and story are accessible to fanboys and casual gamers alike.
Activision takes the classic beat 'em up formula and throws in an experience system that allows you to purchase upgraded attacks, stats, and costumes (think dumbed down Champions of Norrath). While customizing all of this to your liking isn't detrimental to your character's ability to progress (there is an auto-distribute option), it does allow you to build your character to best fit the way you play them.
For an early PS3 title, the graphics are pretty good. By today's standards (almost 3 years later), they are nothing remarkable, but they get the job done. The trailer for Ultimate Alliance 2 absolutely shames the graphics in this title, but c'est la vie.
It's nothing groundbreaking, but it's a boatload of fun; especially with a group of friends.
