A fixture of previous Final Fantasy games, chocobos are gentle creature than can be used as modes of transportation. They will enable you to travel from place to place without fighting any enemies. You'll have a chance to capture your own in the wild with special "Chocobo Lure" Materia. You'll find tougher, stronger chocobos in harsher climates and terrain.
Once you've got a chocobo, you'll probably want to train and race yours at the Gold Saucer. Champion racers make better breeders and breeding is the key to acquiring the all-important Gold Chocobo.
