PlayStation®2 30000 - 50000 Series / HDD

Picture Troubleshooting

If the screen freezes after starting the PlayStation®2: Back to top

For example, the screen does not change from the start-up screen, or the Main Menu does not appear after more than 30 seconds after the screen goes black.

  1. Some files that are related to the internal hard disk drive (40GB) (for PlayStation®2) (HDD) start-up may be damaged.
  2. Run the Diagnose and Repair HDD utility:
    1. Insert your HDD Utility Disc. The opening screen and the Basic Operations screen will appear.
    2. On the Basic Operations screen, press X Btn. The Utilities menu will appear.
    3. Select Diagnose and Repair and press X Btn.
    4. Follow the on-screen instructions to run the utility. The current status will appear on the screen as the utility runs.

NOTE: The Diagnose and Repair utility might take a long time to complete. To prevent software or data loss or corruption, do not open the disc tray, turn off the system, press the reset button, or remove the HDD unit from the system while the utility is running.

  3. If the Diagnose and Repair utility fails to solve the problem, you might need to reinstall the HDD software using HDD Utility Disc (version 1.10). Please see Reinstall the HDD.

If the DVD picture is blurred, or if the screen has a greenish hue: Back to top

  1. Make sure the HDD data connector is properly and securely connected to the PlayStation®2 system or TV.
  2. Check the PlayStation®2 system and TV connections.
  3. You might be watching a DVD using an integrated TV/VCR. Depending on the TV (or VCR), the copy protection on some DVDs could affect the picture quality.
