For safety reasons, disconnect the power plug for the PlayStation®2
computer entertainment system from the electrical outlet before removing
the internal hard disk drive (40GB) (for PlayStation®2) (HDD) from the
system.
Caution:
To help avoid software or data loss or corruption, or damage to the
HDD, you should not turn off or unplug the PlayStation®2 system
when the HDD access indicator, located inside the front vent of the
system, is blinking.
Always follow the correct shutdown procedure. For details, please
refer to the instruction manual for the internal hard disk drive
(40GB) (for PlayStation®2) and HDD utility disc (ver. 1.10).
Do not move the PlayStation®2 system or the HDD for 30 seconds
after shutdown.
Do not turn off the PlayStation®2 using the MAIN POWER switch on
the back of the system without following the proper shutdown procedure.
Doing so may cause software or data loss or corruption, or damage to
the HDD.
Do not touch the black protective covering or the metal parts of the
connectors, because doing so may damage the HDD. Also, the HDD or
network adaptor can become hot to the touch during use. Use caution
in handling these items during the HDD removal process.
To remove the HDD:
Check that the indicator light on the front of the PlayStation®2
system is red. If not, press the standby/RESET button.
Turn off the system using the MAIN POWER switch on the back of the
system.
Disconnect the system's power plug from the electrical outlet.
Using a coin, loosen the mounting screws of the network adaptor,
turning the mounting screws counterclockwise.
NOTE: Do not use a screwdriver to loosen the mounting screws.
Remove the network adaptor by pulling it away from the system. Note
that the HDD remains in the system.
In the following steps you will unlock the HDD, reattach the network
adaptor, and then use the network adaptor to extract the HDD from the
PlayStation®2 system:
Press the two UNLOCK tabs of the HDD to release it from
the system.
Fully insert the HDD power and data connectors of the network
adaptor into the matching connectors of the HDD. Insert the
connectors straight into each other to avoid bending the pins.
Remove the network adaptor along with the connected HDD by
pulling it out of the expansion bay.
Caution:
Do not hold the HDD unit by the network adaptor alone. Always
grasp the HDD by the rails.
After removing the HDD, reattach the expansion bay cover or the network
adaptor to help protect the expansion bus connector located in the
expansion bay.
