PlayStation®2 30000 - 50000 Series / HDD

Formatting the HDD

The Format HDD feature will erase all data on your internal hard disk drive (40GB) (for PlayStation®2) (HDD) and then install the HDD Software. All games and saved game data stored on your HDD will be gone after reformatting. Before you format the HDD, we recommend you transfer any saved game data onto one or more memory cards so you can restore the data to the HDD after formatting has been completed.

Formatting the HDD can be helpful if:

  • The Diagnose and Repair HDD Utility didn't correct your HDD errors.
  • You are unable to browse the contents of your HDD.
  • HDD compatible software cannot be installed onto the HDD.

To use the Format HDD feature:

  1. Insert the HDD Utility Disc into the PlayStation®2 computer entertainment system and close the disc tray.
  2. A screen will appear listing the controls for navigating the HDD Utility Disc. Press X Btn to bypass this screen.
  3. Highlight Format HDD on the main menu and press X Btn.
  4. Three screens will appear explaining the formatting process. Press the right arrow button twice to advance to the screen labeled "Formatting the HDD 3/3."
  5. Press X Btn to begin formatting or press Circle Btn to back out and return to the main menu.
  6. If you choose to format your HDD, you must confirm that choice twice before the procedure can begin. Highlight Yes and press X Btn on each screen to begin formatting.

Press Circle Btn to cancel and return to the main menu.

  2. A message will appear to confirm "HDD formatting and software installation completed."
