Troubleshooting PlayStation®2 Sound Problems

If there is no sound: Back to top

  • Make sure the PlayStation®2 computer entertainment system and TV (and VCR if using one) are turned on and that they are securely connected using the AV cable (integrated audio/video), RFU adaptor, or S VIDEO cable.
  • Visually check to make sure the AC power cord is not damaged. Please see PlayStation®2 70000 Series or PlayStation®2 30000-50000 Series installation for help with set up.
  • Adjust the TV volume to make sure its not turned down low or on mute.
  • Make sure you have selected the correct video input or channel on your TV or VCR.
  • If you are using speakers, check the speaker connections and settings. For example, you might not have selected the appropriate input on the receiver (amplifier).
    • Set the input so that you can listen to sound through your PlayStation®2.
    • Refer to the operating manual for your audio equipment.
  • The PlayStation®2 might be in search/slow-motion mode. Play the DVD at normal speed.

If the sound quality is poor: Back to top

  • The disc may need cleaning. To clean the disc:
    • Use the small, circular pads made specifically for cleaning discs, sold at most music or computer software stores.
    • If you do not have a cleaning pad, you can use a dry, lint-free cloth.

NOTE: Other materials, such as a paper towel or a T-shirt, may scratch the disc. If there are any scratches, smudges, or fingerprints on the disc, it may not function properly.

  • The system may be unstable. Place the system on a flat, stable surface and do not allow it to shake or vibrate.
  • You might be playing a CD with DTS audio tracks. CDs with DTS audio tracks can be used with your PlayStation®2 only when the system is connected to audio equipment with a DTS decoder.
  • Some PlayStation® format software titles might not play properly on a PlayStation®2. PlayStation® format software titles perform differently on a PlayStation®2 system than they do on a PlayStation® system. Make sure the disc can be used with this system.

If the surround effect is difficult to hear when a Dolby Digital audio track is playing: Back to top

  • Check the speaker connections and settings. Refer to the operating manual for your audio equipment.
  • You must specify Dolby Digital as the audio output signal for your PlayStation®2. Set Dolby Digital to "On" for the DIGITAL OUT (OPTICAL) connector.
  • On some DVDs with Dolby Digital audio tracks, the output signal might not contain the entire 5.1 channel range.

If the sound comes from the center speaker only: Back to top

You might be using a disc that sends sound through the center speaker only.
