Picture Troubleshooting

If there is no picture on the screen: Back to top

  • Make sure the PlayStation®2 computer entertainment system and TV (and VCR, if using one) are turned on and that they are securely connected using the AV cable (integrated audio/video), RFU Adaptor, or S VIDEO cable.
  • Visually check to make sure the AC power cord is not damaged. Please see PlayStation®2 70000 Series or PlayStation®2 30000-50000 Series installation for help with set up.
  • Make sure you have selected the correct video input and channel on your TV or VCR.
  • Check that the disc is inserted correctly, with the label side up.

If the screen is bouncing: Back to top

  • Some TVs and monitors have difficulty displaying games, creating a bouncing effect.
  • Try installing the PlayStation®2 system on a different TV. There might be compatibility problems with the PlayStation®2 system and older model TVs.

If picture noise appears: Back to top

  • Make sure the PlayStation2® and TV (and VCR if using one) are turned on and that they are securely connected using the AV cable (integrated audio/video), RFU adaptor, or S VIDEO cable.
  • Visually check to make sure the AC power cord is not damaged.
  • Make sure you have selected the correct video input and channel on your TV or VCR.
  • The disc may need cleaning. To clean the disc:
    • Use the small, circular pads made specifically for cleaning discs, sold at most music or computer software stores.
    • If you do not have a cleaning pad, you can use a dry, lint-free cloth.

NOTE: Other materials, such as a paper towel or a T-shirt, may scratch the disc. If there are any scratches, smudges, or fingerprints on the disc, it may not function properly.

  • The system may be unstable. Place the system on a flat, stable surface and do not allow it to shake or vibrate.
  • When playing a DVD video on the PlayStation®2, connect the system directly to the TV. If the video signal from the PlayStation®2 has to go through the VCR to get to the TV, the copy protection on some DVD videos could affect picture quality. Please see PlayStation®2 70000 Series or PlayStation®2 30000-50000 Series installation for help with set up.
  • The aspect ratio might be incorrect:
    • The aspect ratio cannot be changed when playing wide picture DVD videos.
    • On some discs, the aspect ratio cannot be changed.
    • On some TVs, the aspect ratio cannot be changed.
  • Do not connect a selector or receiver (amplifier) between the PlayStation®2 and the TV. Make sure the PlayStation®2 is connected directly to the TV.
