PlayStation®2 30000 - 50000 Series / Network Adaptor

General Troubleshooting

I keep getting a "Connection Test Failed" message while setting up my PlayStation®2 computer entertainment system for online play. What do I do?

  • Broadband:
    1. Turn off and unplug the power cable of your Broadband modem, any network equipment (such as a router), and your PlayStation®2 system from the electrical outlet for a minimum of 2 minutes.
    2. While your system is turned off and unplugged, check all cables for damage, and make sure they are plugged in securely.
    3. Make sure you are using the correct type of cables:
      • The cable that plugs into the back of the PlayStation®2 system (or network adaptor) must be a Category 5 (CAT5) or better, straight-through Ethernet cable (not cross-over cable).
      • We recommend the Ethernet cables be no longer than 50 feet.
      • Check with your Internet Service Provider (ISP) or LAN administrator to see what other cabling specifications you might need to meet.
    4. Turn on the modem, router (if you have one), PlayStation®2, etc., starting at the Broadband modem and working back toward the PlayStation®2.
    5. Using an Online Start-Up Disc or online enabled game, create a new network profile, being careful to enter any user IDs and passwords in the correct case (upper-case or lower-case). For instructions on creating a network configuration, please see Creating a Network Configuration.
  • Dial-Up:
    1. Turn off your PlayStation®2 for a few seconds, and unplug the power cable from the wall outlet.
    2. While your system is turned off and unplugged, check the phone cable for damage, and make sure it is plugged securely into the LINE port on the back of your system and into the telephone wall jack.
    3. Turn on the PlayStation®2.
    4. Using an Online Start-Up Disc or online enabled game, create a new network profile, being careful to enter any user IDs and passwords in the correct case (upper-case or lower-case). For instructions on creating a network configuration.

If you are still receiving an on-screen error or are unable to connect after trying these steps, please contact Consumer Services.

My computer is in a different room than my PlayStation®2 system and TV. How can I hook up my PlayStation®2 system to the internet?

One option is to use a very long phone cord if you have a dial-up connection or a long Ethernet cable if you have a high-speed connection. The PlayStation®2 and the network adaptor will function with routers with NAT (Network Address Translation), network switches, and hubs. However, SCEA Consumer Services will not support these hardware devices. Also, keep in mind that as the cable gets longer, the chance of losing your signal increases. We do not recommend using a phone cord longer than 25 feet or an Ethernet cable longer than 50 feet.

If you are using Broadband, another option is to use a Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) to connect your SCPH-70000 series PlayStation®2 console or network adaptor to your Broadband connection. However, this type of connection requires additional equipment that SCEA Consumer Services will not support. Your ISP might have more information about this option.

How can I set up my ISP account if I don't own a computer? Can I subscribe to my local ISP and initialize my account with the PlayStation®2 system and not a computer?

If you are setting up a dial-up account, generally you will not need a computer to initialize the account. The Online Start-Up Disc allows new internet users to sign up immediately through EarthLink for dial-up services. You might also contact other ISPs displayed on the Online Start-Up Disc. Their phone numbers are accessible by selecting "I Don't Have an ISP," then selecting an icon on the "Select an Internet Service Provider (ISP)" screen.

If you are using Online Start-Up Disc 4.0, you can use the BuyTelco software to search for, select, and subscribe to a Broadband service in your area. To access the BuyTelco software, select the "See Broadband Offers" menu item from the Online Start-Up Disc Main Menu.

NOTE: You must have the dial-up modem in your PlayStation®2 system or network adaptor connected to an active analog telephone line to complete the BuyTelco procedure (PlayStation®2 models SCPH-70001 and SCPH-75001 do not include a dial-up modem). If you are setting up a Broadband internet connection without using the BuyTelco software, you may need a computer to initialize the account. We recommend contacting the ISPs in your area about their sign-up procedures. If you would like a copy of the Online Start-Up Disc 4.0, please contact Consumer Services.

Is my ISP compatible with the PlayStation®2 system and the network adaptor?

The PlayStation®2 system and the network adaptor work with most ISPs that do not require that you use proprietary software, including EarthLink, SBC Yahoo!, BellSouth, and Sympatico. The Online Start-Up Disc that came with your SCPH-70000 series PlayStation®2 or network adaptor also includes the AOL setup software. Please check with your ISP for details.

Will the PlayStation®2 system and the network adaptor work with my router/switch/hub?

Both the SCPH-70000 series PlayStation®2 systems and the network adaptor can function using a router with NAT (Network Address Translation), network switches, and hubs. However, SCEA does not have specific information in regards to how the PlayStation®2 system or the network adaptor will function in your network environment. Your ISP might have more information for you.

My home is networked using a Wireless Access Point (WAP), wireless router, or wireless modem. Can I use this with the PlayStation®2 or the network adaptor?

Neither the SCPH-70000 series PlayStation®2 system nor the network adaptor will support wireless internet connections without additional hardware that is not supported by SCEA Consumer Services. Check with the manufacturer of your WAP, router, or modem to see what hardware they recommend, and how to configure it to create a wireless connection to your PlayStation®2 system.

I am able to connect to the internet with my ISP connection (through my computer) but I am unable to connect to your game servers using my PlayStation®2 system. What can I do? AND I was able to create a network configuration, but I have not been able to connect to a single game. Am I missing something?

First, make sure you are able to create a network configuration using the Start-up Disc (or, in some cases, an online game disc). You can check the network configuration file by using the Online Start-Up Disc. Use:

  • Create/Edit your Network Setting" with Online Start-Up Disc 4.0.
  • ISP Setup" with older Start-Up Discs.

If you are able to create a successful network configuration, but you are unable to connect to any game servers, check to see if you have a firewall set up in your network that is preventing a valid connection. Some common firewall locations include:

  • Broadband Routers
  • Broadband Modems
  • Wireless Access Points

If you have a firewall, please refer to your firewall or networking hardware documentation for instructions on how to grant other systems, such as the PlayStation®2 system, access to the internet.

You may also need to contact the firewall or hardware's manufacturer for information on configuring the firewall. For more information, please contact Consumer Services.

If you do not have a firewall, check with your ISP to see if there are any connection limitations. Ask if the ISP blocks certain internet port ranges. For more information on ports that SCEA online games use, please contact Consumer Services.

To get port information for 3rd party games, check the game's documentation, or contact the game's publisher.

I have a DSL or cable modem that connects to my computer through the USB port. Can I connect to a USB connector on the PlayStation®2 system using this connection?

No, a network connection can only be achieved with the network adaptor or a SCPH-70000 series PlayStation®2 system by either plugging an analog modem line into the LINE connector (where applicable) or an Ethernet cable into the NETWORK connector.

I can't seem to connect using my cable modem. What's going on?

There are a few different things you may want to try to establish a connection:

  1. Turn off your cable modem, any network equipment (such as a router), and your PlayStation®2 system and unplug the power cables from the electrical outlet for a minimum of 2 minutes.
  2. While your system is turned off and unplugged, check all cables for damage, and make sure they are plugged in securely.
  3. Make sure you are using the correct cable types:
    • The cable that plugs into the back of the PlayStation®2 system (or network adaptor) must be a Category 5 (CAT5) or better, straight-through Ethernet cable (not cross-over cable).
    • We recommend the Ethernet cables be no longer than 50 feet.
    • Check with your ISP and LAN administrator to see what other cabling specifications you might need to meet.
  4. Turn on the modem, router (if you have one), PlayStation®2 system, etc., starting at the cable modem and working back toward the PlayStation®2 system.
  5. Using an Online Start-Up Disc or online enabled game, create a new network profile, being careful to enter any user IDs and passwords in the correct case (upper-case or lower-case). For instructions on creating a network configuration, please see Creating a Network Configuration.
  6. Some ISP's require any hardware that connects to their service be registered. Providing the MAC (Media Access Control) Address to the ISP can do this.
    1. To obtain the MAC Address of the network adaptor using the Online Start-Up Disc:
      • Original Version (no version #): Run the Start-Up Disc. When the connection testing fails, press the SELECT button on the DUALSHOCK®2 analog controller for help, and the MAC Address will be displayed in a HELP prompt.
      • Versions 2.x and 3.x: Run the Start-Up Disc, select "Advanced" from the Main Menu, and select "Network Tools". Run the "Connection Test." If the connection is unsuccessful, press the TRIANGLE button on the DUALSHOCK®2 analog controller, then press the X button. The MAC Address will appear on the next screen.
      • Version 4.0: With the version 4.0 Online Start-Up Disc, you must have a Broadband network configuration already created on the memory card (8MB) (for PlayStation®2) before you can view the MAC Address. From the Main Menu (after accepting the user agreement), select "Create/Edit Your Network Setting," and press the X button on the DUALSHOCK®2 analog controller. Select a network configuration profile and press the X button. The MAC Address will appear in the text box on the next screen.
    2. To obtain the MAC Address of the SCPH-70000 series PlayStation®2 system:
      • Do NOT insert the Online Start-Up Disc.
      • From the Main Menu, press the TRIANGLE button on the DUALSHOCK®2 analog controller.
      • The MAC Address will appear on the Version Information screen that follows.

If you are still unable to connect after trying these steps, please contact Consumer Services.

I can't seem to connect through NetZero, Juno, WMConnect, or my school internet connection. What's going on?

Although SCEA offers an open ISP approach, the network adaptor will not be able to connect through any free internet service or any service that requires proprietary software installation. The only exception to this is AOL. The Start-Up Disc that came with your PlayStation®2 system or network adaptor has the AOL software already included. You are able to connect with most other ISPs.

I'm able to create a network configuration file for my internet dial-up settings, but I cannot play online with SOCOM (or SOCOM II or SOCOM 3). What's going on?

SOCOM: US Navy SEALs, SOCOM II, and SOCOM 3 are all Broadband-only games, and require a Broadband internet connection for online game play. If you are using a dial-up connection, you will not be able to play SOCOM, SOCOM II, or SOCOM 3 online. This will not affect your ability to play SOCOM, SOCOM II, or SOCOM 3 in single-player offline mode. To see if a PlayStation®2 game is Broadband-only, check the features notice on the back of the game box.

I'm able to play SOCOM (or SOCOM II, or SOCOM 3) online, but I can't seem to use the headsets. The headset works fine when I'm playing the offline version of the game. Why can't I use the headset online?

If the host of the game is behind a firewall, this may prevent you from broadcasting and receiving headset transmissions. Tell the game host to make sure they open up the appropriate ports on their firewall in both directions (incoming and outgoing). If you have a router, you may have a firewall that is blocking this transmission. Try to connect directly from the modem to the Ethernet port on your PlayStation®2 system or network adaptor and test to see if this change allows the headsets to broadcast and receive. If this set up works, then the router most likely has a firewall preventing this type of transmission. Contact your router manufacturer and ask how to open the router's firewall to the following port range: UDP Ports 6000-7000.

I brought my memory card (8MB) (for PlayStation®2) with my network configuration save over to my friends house and I can't connect with his PlayStation®2 or network adaptor. What happened?

To safeguard consumer information and ensure security, the network configuration save on your memory card (8MB) (for PlayStation®2) can only be used with the PlayStation®2 and/or network adaptor that the network configuration was originally created from. If you want to use the memory card in another PlayStation®2 system, or with a different network adaptor, you must create a new network configuration file to be able to play online.

What's the benefit of registering my SCPH-70000 series PlayStation®2 system or network adaptor?

By registering your SCPH-70000 series PlayStation®2 system or network adaptor with SCEA, we can provide you with the best customer service as well as the most up-to-date news and information. Not only are you letting us know that you're reaching a new gaming experience, but you are also making yourself eligible to become a tester for online games that SCEA and other companies may publish in the future.

Can I browse the internet using my SCPH-70000 series PlayStation®2 system or the network adaptor?

No, there is no browser currently available for the PlayStation®2 system. The network adaptor's primary function is to connect your older model PlayStation®2 system to a new gaming experience online.

Does SCEA offer an internet service for the network adaptor that I can subscribe to?

SCEA does not have any current plans to become an Internet Service Provider (ISP). Connectivity on the PlayStation®2 system supports an open ISP model, allowing our consumers to choose a variety of ISPs to connect to the internet.

I have a DSL connection to my computer through a normal RJ-11 phone line. Can I connect this line to the LINE connector on the network adaptor or my SCPH-70000 series PlayStation®2 system and establish a DSL connection?

No, the PlayStation®2 system and network adaptor do not contain any Broadband equipment, such as a DSL modem.

In order to establish a DSL, cable, or any other type of Broadband connection, an Ethernet cable (RJ-45) must be plugged into the NETWORK connector on the network adaptor or SCPH-70000 series PlayStation®2 system. The other end of the Ethernet cable must be plugged into an Ethernet port of a device such as a Broadband modem, router, hub, or switch.

What are the networking specifications of the network adaptor and SCPH-70000 series PlayStation®2 system?

The network adaptor, SCPH-70011 PlayStation®2 system, and SCPH70012 PlayStation®2 system offer both Broadband and dial-up connectivity, featuring a 10/100 Base-T Ethernet capability combined with a 56K V.90 analog modem. The SCPH-70001 and SCPH-75001 PlayStation®2 systems offer Broadband connection capability, featuring a built-in 10/100 Base-T Ethernet adaptor.

It says I'm connected, but I was unable to send the registration data to SCEA. What can I do?

This is most likely caused by a slowdown on the internet, or a problem with the SCEA registration servers.

Try to play a game online. If you are not able to connect to any game servers, then you might have a problem with the network configuration. Try creating the configuration again, making sure the settings that you enter match your dial-up, Broadband, or home network configuration. See Create a network configuration.

If you are able to play games online, then there is probably an issue with the internet, or perhaps with the SCEA registration servers. Try waiting a while, then try to register again (you don't need to go through the entire setup procedure to register).

If you continue to have problems, please contact Consumer Services.

How do I connect using an MSN account?

In order to connect to MSN, you will first need to alter your login ID by typing in MSN/ before your login ID. For example, if your normal login ID is johnsample@msn.com, then you will need to type in MSN/johnsample@msn.com. Your password remains the same. If you continue to have problems, please contact MSN for assistance.

Why does the PlayStation®2 network adaptor say HDD on the product?

The network adaptor is marked with the letters HDD to indicate that it can be used in conjunction with the Internal Hard Disk Drive (40GB) (for PlayStation®2).
