General Troubleshooting

If the PLAYSTATION®3 does not turn on: Back to top


  • Check that the main power switch is turned on.
  • Check that the AC power cord is securely inserted in the system and the electrical outlet.

If you forgot your password: Back to top


  • If you initialize the system using "System Settings" > "Restore Default Settings", your password will return to "0000." However, note that all settings other than the password will also be reset. Once these settings are reset, they cannot be recovered.

If the PLAYSTATION®3 makes noise: Back to top


  • Because some discs read at higher speeds, disc noise may be louder than normal.

If the PLAYSTATION®3 is warm: Back to top


  • When the system is being used or is turned on, it may become warm. This is not a malfunction.

If the screen is frozen or the PLAYSTATION®3 does not operate: Back to top


  • Restart the system. Touching the power button on the system front for 10 seconds or longer will force the system to shut down. After shutdown, turn on the system again.

If the power indicator on the PLAYSTATION®3 is flashing red and green alternately: Back to top


  • The interior of the system has become unusually hot. Check whether the system is being used in a hot location or whether the vents are blocked. Stop using the system and leave it unused until it cools down. Continuing to use the system in the above condition will cause it to stop functioning.

If the power indicator is flashing red and the system does not operate: Back to top


  • The temperature inside the system has risen too high. Check whether the system is being used in a hot location or whether the vents are blocked. Touch the system's power button to stop the flashing, and then leave the system unused until it cools down. After it cools down, turn on the system again.

If the PLAYSTATION®3 does not recognize content: Back to top


  • The content may be of a format that is not supported by the system. Content of types not supported by the system will not be recognized. For information on supported formats, refer to the online user's guide.

If saved data from a game cannot be copied to the hard disk: Back to top


  • Copying of certain data is prohibited.

If the desired video function cannot be performed: Back to top


  • Playback conditions may be set in advance by the software developer. In such cases, certain options may not be available, even if you follow the instructions in the product documentation.

If the screen color does not seem right: Back to top


  • The PLAYSTATION®3 system's background color changes automatically in time with the hour of the day.
