Universal Media Disc (UMD™) Troubleshooting

If the game, movie or music disc (UMD™) freezes or skips while playing: Back to top


  • If possible, test the disc on another PSP® (PlayStation® Portable) system.
    • If the disc still does not function properly, it might need to be replaced.
    • If the disc does function properly, the PSP® might need repairs. See How to Obtain Service.
  • Make sure you are not using any unlicensed game modification devices, which can interfere with game function.
  • Make sure the disc recording surface and cassette are not damaged.
  • The disc might need cleaning. To clean the disc:
    • Use the small, circular pads made specifically for cleaning discs, sold at most music or computer software stores.
    • If you do not have a cleaning pad, you can use a dry, lint-free cloth.

      NOTE: Other materials, such as a paper towel or a T-shirt, may scratch the disc. If there are any scratches, smudges, or fingerprints on the disc, it may not function properly.


  • Do not let the PSP® or any PSP® accessories come in contact with liquid. If any part of the PSP® gets wet, discontinue use until it is completely dry.
  • Check the regional code on the UMD™ Video. The only regional codes that the North American PSP® is tested to work properly with are "ALL" and "1."

  • Make sure the disc is properly inserted with the label facing the back of the PSP®.
    Try removing the disc and reinserting it.
  • Make sure the disc recording surface and cassette are not damaged.
  • The disc might need cleaning. To clean the disc:
    • Use the small, circular pads made specifically for cleaning discs, sold at most music or computer software stores.
    • If you do not have a cleaning pad, you can use a dry, lint-free cloth.

  • Check for moisture condensation. If moisture condensation occurs, remove the disc from the PSP® and do not use the PSP® until the condensation has evaporated, which can take an hour or two.
