Screen Troubleshooting

If the screen suddenly turns dark: Back to top


  • Check the Backlight Auto-Off setting. If it is turned on, the backlight will turn off after a set period of time. Press any button to turn the screen back on. To check the Backlight Auto-Off setting:
    1. Highlight (Power Settings) under (Settings) from the home menu, and press X Button.
    2. Select Backlight Auto-Off, choose a setting, and press X Button.

  • Check the Auto Sleep setting. If it is turned on, the screen will turn dark after a set period of time. Press any button to turn the screen back on. To check the Auto Sleep setting:
    1. Highlight (Power Settings) under (Settings) from the home menu, and press X Button.
    2. Select Auto Sleep, choose a setting, and press X Button.

The screen might appear dark depending on the angle you are viewing it from. Use the display button on the front of the PSP® (PlayStation® Portable) system to adjust the brightness.

Note: The brightest setting can only be used when your PSP® is plugged into an electrical outlet with the AC adaptor.

If the black, red, blue and green spots on the screen do not disappear: Back to top


On some LCD screens, black spots might appear, or red, blue, or green spots may remain on the screen. This is part of the production process and is not a malfunction.

If the Theme setting is set to Original, the background color automatically changes at the beginning of each month. The PSP® (PlayStation® Portable) system is set to Original when you buy it. To check the theme setting:

  1. Highlight (Settings) from the home menu, and press X Button.
  2. Select Theme Settings Icon(Theme Settings), then select Theme and choose a setting.
