Overall
New XMB™ (XrossMediaBar) screen design
The background color and design of the default theme for the XMB™ screen have been revised. Also, the text has been enlarged to make the XMB™ screen easier to use.

- If you want to display the original theme, select [Classic] under (Settings) > [Theme Settings] > [Theme].
Information panel
An information panel has been added on the upper right of the screen. You can view the number of Friends who are online, be alerted about unread messages and view the latest information that is available under [What's New].

Folder levels
The number of folder levels that can be displayed under
(Photo),
(Music) and
(Video) has been increased. If you save your data in storage media using a folder structure such as the one shown below (using music files as an example), content saved in the second-level folders will be displayed on the XMB™ screen.

Copying text
You can now copy text using the on-screen keyboard. You can use this feature to copy text on a screen from which the on-screen keyboard is displayed, such as the screen for creating a message under
(Friends).

Copying and pasting text
- Press the
button on the text field that contains the text that you want to copy.
The on-screen keyboard is displayed.
- Select
, and then follow the on-screen instructions to select the text that you want to copy from the screen that is displayed.

- Select the field in which you want to paste the text.

- Select
, and then select the text to be pasted by pressing the
button.

Network
What's New

[Information Board] has been replaced by [What's New] and contains a new design and new features. You can check the latest information from PlayStation®Store and check the content that you played recently as soon as you turn on the PS3™ system. When you select an item under [What’s New], you can view detailed information about the item as well as access PlayStation®Store. If the item is a game, you can start the game from that screen by pressing the START button.

- Some games cannot be started from the [What’s New] screen.
Settings
Audio Multi-Output
[Audio Multi-Output] has been added as an option under [Sound Settings]. This feature allows simultaneous digital audio output from the HDMI OUT connector, the DIGITAL OUT (OPTICAL) connector, and the AV MULTI OUT connector. With this feature set to ‘On’, you will not need to manually adjust the system’s audio output settings for the devices in use.

When the multi-output feature is enabled, the following conditions will occur:
- Audio output to connectors that are not selected in
(Settings) >
(Sound Settings) > [Audio Output Settings] is downscaled to 2 channels.
- If you select [HDMI] in
(Settings) >
(Sound Settings) > [Audio Output Settings], audio will be output from the HDMI OUT connector with the following restrictions:
- Audio in Linear PCM format can only be output up to 5.1 ch, 44.1/48 kHz.
- Even if [Audio Multi-Output] is set to [On] on a CECH-2000 series system, bitstream audio recorded in Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Digital Plus or DTS-HD format cannot be output on the system.
- If you select [Optical Digital] in
(Settings) >
(Sound Settings) > [Audio Output Settings], audio will be output from the DIGITAL OUT (OPTICAL) connector with the following restriction:
- Audio in Linear PCM format can only be output up to 44.1/48 kHz.
Upsampled output of music files
Music files that are saved on the hard disk or storage media can now be upsampled for output on the PS3™ system. You can improve the playback quality of the music files by adjusting settings in [Audio Output Settings], [Output Frequency] and [Bitmapping].
Required playback conditions for upsampled output
The audio device in use must support sampling frequencies of 88.2 kHz or 176.4 kHz.
Adjusting settings for upsampled output
- Select [Linear PCM 2 Ch. 88.2 kHz] or [Linear PCM 2 Ch. 176.4 kHz] under
(Settings) >
(Sound Settings) > [Audio Output Settings].
- Select [44.1/88.2/176.4 kHz] under
(Settings) >
(Music Settings) > [Output Frequency].
Audio is upsampled and output at a frequency of either 88.2 kHz or 176.4 kHz depending on the audio equipment in use.
- If necessary, adjust settings under
(Settings) >
(Music Settings) > [Bitmapping] to match your preferences.
You can further improve the playback quality by adjusting this setting.
- If [Output Frequency] is set to [44.1/88.2/176.4 kHz], you cannot use other features such as
(Photo) or
(Internet Browser) while the music is playing. You must set to [48 kHz] to use these features while listening to music.
- Playback quality will vary depending on the content being played and the playback conditions of the audio equipment in use.
HDD Content Audio Language and HDD Content Subtitle Language
[HDD Content Audio Language] and [HDD Content Subtitle Language] have been added as options under [Video Settings]. You can now specify the language for audio content and the subtitle language to be used when playing content that is saved on storage media, such as downloaded content from PlayStation®Store.
- Depending on the content, you may not be able to specify the audio or subtitle language.
Video
Using the wireless controller for fast forward and fast reverse operations
You can now use the right stick of the wireless controller to perform fast forward or fast reverse operations during video content playback. You can control the playback speed by rotating the right stick.
Press upward, and then turn clockwise.

Network
Printing a Web page
You can now print a Web page in the Internet browser. To print a page, open the browse mode menu, and then select
(File) > [Print This Screen].
- To use this feature, you must first set up a printer by selecting
(Settings) > [Printer Settings] > [Printer Selection].
Saving a Web page as an image
In the Internet browser, you can now save the visible area of a Web page as an image. To save as an image, open the browse mode menu, and then select
(File) > [Save Screenshot]. The screenshot will be stored and can then be viewed under
(Photo).
Friends
Viewing messages in the profile screen
A list of messages that you have exchanged with a Friend can now be accessed from the Friend’s profile screen. Select
(Message List) in the profile screen of a Friend. The list of messages will be displayed.
