Despite what the manual indicates, you can not save your progress during a tournament. You can only save options and hidden characters upon completion of a tournament.

Saving & Loading

On the Main Menu scroll to Options and press X or start. Scroll down the options list until you reach LOAD/SAVE and press either X or Start. Press Up or Down to choose either Save Game or Load Game. Now press the X for slot 1 or Circle for slot 2. While on this screen you can also turn the Auto Save OFF or ON by pressing either left or right on the D-Pad. When finished scroll down to exit and press X or Start.
