Customizing wallpaper
(Theme Settings) has been added as an option under 
(Settings). You can set a background image for XMB™ (XrossMediaBar).
Wallpaper
Set whether to use an image that was selected as wallpaper under 
(Photo) as the XMB™ background.

Setting wallpaper under (Photo)
With the image you want to use displayed, press the 
button, and then select 
[Set as Wallpaper] from the control panel. Follow the on-screen instructions to set the wallpaper.
Hint
- If you no longer want to display the wallpaper, adjust the setting under (Settings) > (Theme Settings) > [Wallpaper].
Upsampling audio CD output
Upsampled output of audio CDs is now supported. You can adjust audio CD playback quality by adjusting settings under [Audio Output Settings], [Audio CD Output Frequency] and [Bitmapping].
Playback environment required for upsampled output
- The audio device in use must support a sampling frequency of 88.2 kHz or 176.4 kHz.
Adjusting settings for upsampled output
- Select [Linear PCM 2 Ch. 88.2 kHz] or [Linear PCM 2 Ch. 176.4 kHz] under (Settings) >
(Sound Settings) > [Audio Output Settings].
- Select [44.1/88.2/176.4 kHz] under (Settings) >
(Music Settings) > [Audio CD Output Frequency].
Audio output is upsampled at a frequency of 88.2 kHz or 176.4 kHz to match the audio device in use.
Hints
- You can further adjust the playback quality by adjusting the bitmapping setting. Go to (Settings)> (Music Settings) > [Bitmapping], and then select the appropriate setting.
- The playback quality of audio CDs varies depending on the content that is being played and the playback environment.
Audio CD Output Frequency
［44.1/88.2/176.4 kHz］has been added as an option in [Audio CD Output Frequency］under (Settings)＞ (Music Settings).
This option enables users to set the output frequency for audio CDs. Adjust the setting to match the audio device in use.

Set to output audio at the highest sampling frequency possible for the device in use. The system will select from among 44.1 kHz, 88.2 kHz and 176.4 kHz. |
Hint
- If the audio device in use does not support frequencies of 44.1, 88.2 and 176.4 kHz, sound may not be output from the audio device. In this case, select [48 kHz].
Bitmapping
[Type 2] has been added as an option in [Bitmapping］under (Settings)＞ (Music Settings).
This option enables users to adjust settings for the audio output of audio CDs or Super Audio CDs.

Hint
- When playing audio CDs, [Type 1] and [Type 2] options are effective only when audio is being output at a frequency of 88.2 kHz or 176.4 kHz. You must set [Audio CD Output Frequency] to [44.1/88.2/176.4 kHz] to take advantage of this option.
BD/DVD Settings
[On] has been added as an option in ［BD 1080p 24 Hz Output (HDMI)］ under (Settings) ＞ 
(BD/DVD Settings).

Hints
- Use this setting when the TV is connected to the system using an HDMI cable. Adjust the setting to match the TV in use.
- The TV in use must support 1080p 24 Hz video mode. For details, refer to the instructions supplied with the device.
- The BD that is to be played must also support 1080p 24 Hz video mode. In most cases, commercially available BD video software (BD-ROMs) with "1080p" displayed as the recording mode have video recorded at 1080p 24 Hz resolution.
- "24 Hz" equals 24 frames per second (24p).
- If the video output settings do not match the TV in use, video may not be displayed on the screen when the resolution changes. However, the setting will automatically reset to the original resolution after a short time. If nothing is displayed on the screen for more than 30 seconds, turn off the system, and then turn it on again.
Video
AV Settings
The [Image Quality Adjustment] option in the control panel has been changed to [AV Settings].
Press the button during video playback, and then select 
(AV Settings) from the control panel. Some settings adjusted in this way will be saved by the system and can be adjusted later under (BD/DVD Settings) or 
(Display Settings).
Hint
- The settings available vary depending on the content that is being played.
Playing AVCHD
You can now play AVCHD-format video files that are saved on Memory Stick™ media or on the hard disk of a digital video camera.
AVCHD video can be played by inserting Memory Stick™ media in the Memory Stick™ slot of a PS3™ system* or by connecting a digital video camera to the PS3™ system using a USB cable.
* Models equipped with media slots only. On other models an appropriate USB adaptor (not included) is required to use storage media. When using a USB adaptor, use a device that supports Hi-Speed USB (USB 2.0).
Hint
- A device that is connected to a USB connector of the PS3™ system will be displayed as
(USB Device) in the XMB™ home menu.
Game
Adjusting screen display settings
You can now adjust screen display settings while playing PlayStation® and PlayStation®2 format software.
If you press the PS button on the SIXAXIS™ wireless controller during gameplay and then select [Settings] on the screen that is displayed, you can adjust the following settings:
Screen Mode

Hint
- This option can be set only when [Normal] or [Full Screen] is selected under (Settings) ＞

Set to use smoothing to reduce the roughness of the displayed image. |
Sorting games
You can now sort games that are saved on the hard disk.
If you select [Sort By] from the options menu, you can sort the icons by creation date and time, or by software format. Saved data and internal memory cards can also be sorted in this way.
Internet browser
Entering text in online text fields
Using a commercially available USB keyboard, you can now enter text directly into text entry fields of Web pages.
If you place the cursor in the field and then press the [Enter] key of the USB keyboard, you can perform text entry.
Hints
- You may not be able to use this feature on some Web pages.
- Text entry in online text fields can be performed only when [1080i] or [1080p] has been set in [Video Output Settings] under (Display Settings).
Friends
Using emoticons
You can now use emoticons when creating a message under 
(Friends).
Select 
(the symbol key) on the on-screen keyboard, and then choose the emoticon that you want to use.
Overall
Grouping content
You can now select [Group Content］when changing a file or folder icon.
You can change the icon for a file or folder saved on the hard disk of the PS3™ system on the screen that is displayed when you select [Information] from the options menu. By selecting [Group Content] on this screen, you can sort displayed items by date. Use this feature to search for a specific item from among various items.
Hint
- You cannot change the icon for some file types.
