Disc Troubleshooting

If you are having problems playing PlayStation® format software / discs or music CDs on your PlayStation® game console:

  • Make sure the disc is inserted correctly, with the label side up, and that the disc tray is firmly closed.
  • Make sure the underside of the disc is clean. If a disc begins to skip or freeze, or if there is no reaction whatsoever from a disc that has been inserted into the console, it might need to be cleaned. To clean the disc:
    • Use the small, circular pads made specifically for cleaning discs, sold at most music or computer software stores.
    • If you do not have a cleaning pad, you can clean the disc using a dry, lint-free cloth.
NOTE: Other materials, such as paper towels or a T-shirt, may scratch the disc. If there are any scratches, smudges, or fingerprints on the disc, it may not function properly.
  • If possible, try to play the disc on another PlayStation® console.
    • If the disc still does not play correctly, the disc might need replacing.
    • If the disc does play correctly, the PlayStation® console might need repairs. Please see How to Obtain Service.
  • Make sure the disc can be used with your PlayStation®. Only PlayStation® format software tiles and audio CDs can be played on the PlayStation® console.
  • If problems persist, please contact Consumer Services.
