PlayStation®2 30000 - 50000 Series / HDD

Installing the HDD

The simplified installation instructions below are intended as a reference only. For full instructions, please refer to the hardware installation guide and instruction manual supplied with the internal hard disk drive (40GB) (for PlayStation®2) (HDD).

Caution:

  • For safety reasons, do not connect the power plug for the PlayStation®2 system to an electrical outlet until HDD installation is complete.
  • The HDD has an exposed metal casing. To avoid injury, be careful when handling the HDD.
  • Do not hold the HDD unit by the network adaptor alone. Always grasp the rails, being careful not to touch the HDD's black protective covering or the circuit board beneath.
  1. If you do not have a network adaptor installed, remove the expansion bay cover. (If you already have a network adaptor installed, skip to step 2.) Use the indentation at the top of the cover for grip. Keep the expansion bay cover for future use.

  1. If you already have a network adaptor installed, remove the network adaptor now. (If you do not have a network adaptor installed, skip to step 3.) Please see Remove the network adaptor.

  1. Connect the network adaptor to the HDD.
    Caution:
    • Do not touch the black protective covering or the metal parts of the connectors, because doing so can damage the HDD. Always grasp the rails, being careful not to touch the HDD's black protective covering or the circuit board beneath.
    1. Press in the LOCK tabs of the HDD (shown here and on page 7 of the HDD Hardware Installation Guide).
    2. Hold the HDD with the black surface facing down and the network adaptor with the HDD power and data connectors at the bottom and facing the HDD.
    3. Fully insert the connectors of the network adaptor into the matching connectors of the HDD.
NOTE: Insert the connectors straight into each other to avoid bending the pins.

  1. Insert the HDD unit (the network adaptor and the HDD combined) straight into the expansion bay on the back of the PlayStation®2 system.
  2. Hold the HDD as shown here (also shown on page 8 of the HDD Hardware Installation Guide).

  1. Press lightly on the front of the network adaptor until the HDD is fully inserted in the expansion bay.

  1. Fasten the HDD unit to the system.
    Caution:
    • Do not use a screwdriver to tighten the mounting screws.
    • Do not over-tighten the screws, because this can damage the screws and the system.
Using a coin, turn the mounting screws on the network adaptor in a clockwise direction.
